1. What Is a Combo Chart?
A Combo Chart combines two or more different chart types within a single visualization canvas. The most common enterprise combination is Clustered Column + Line:
Represents absolute monetary amounts (e.g. Monthly Revenue ₹80,000 to ₹125,000).
Represents profitability percentage or growth rate (e.g. Profit Margin 18% to 25%).
4. The Secondary Axis Solution for Differing Scales
Why do we need two vertical axes? If you plot ₹100,000 and 20% (0.20) on a single scale of 0 to 120,000, the 20% line sits completely flat on the floor at zero. A Secondary Axis creates a dedicated scale on the right:
| Axis Position | Assigned Metric | Value Scale | Visual Encoding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Axis (Left) | Sales / Revenue | ₹0 to ₹140,000 | Clustered Columns |
| Secondary Axis (Right) | Profit Margin | 0% to 30% | Trend Line with Markers |

Task: Observe how the Column (Sales) and Line (Profit Margin %) interact. Toggle the Secondary Axis to see what happens when both share a single scale:

When two metrics share the exact same currency unit (₹), they use a single primary axis so the target line directly intersects the actual bars:

21. Accuracy & Production Best Practices
Guidelines for professional business dashboard visualization:
- Always Match Axis Label Colors to Series Colors: Format the left primary axis title in the same color as the column bars (e.g. Cyan), and the right secondary axis title in the color of the line (e.g. Amber) to make scale interpretation effortless.
- Do Not Overcomplicate: Limit combo charts to a maximum of 2 distinct chart types and 2 axes. If you have 4+ unrelated metrics, separate them into an executive KPI grid.
